Oklahoma high school coaching legend Larry Turner has served as the head baseball coach at Owasso High School for over four decades, with the 2025 season marking his 43rd at the helm of the program.
Through his 42 seasons as skipper, his teams have combined to give him a career record of 1,284-295 (.813). Turner’s 1,284 wins are the most all-time by any spring-only coach in the state of Oklahoma and he is the third-winningest spring-only coach nationally among all high school baseball coaches.
Under Turner’s leadership, the Rams have captured 28 regional championships to go along with 12 Oklahoma state title victories that span five decades, while also finishing as state runner-up on six occasions.
Turner’s 2013 Owasso squad achieved perfection, capturing the programs 12th state title with a flawless 36-0 record, becoming the state’s first 6A baseball team to finish the season undefeated. That year, Turner was honored as The Oklahoman All-State Coach of the Year and was named the National Baseball Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
Turner has received numerous coaching honors, including being selected as an ABCA/Diamond Sports High School Regional Coach of the year in 2007, 2011 and 2017, while garnering ABCA/Diamond Sports National High School Coach of the Year honors in 2007.
Turner’s teams have featured 62 All-State players, 22 All-Americans, five Oklahoma Players of the Year and five Gatorade Players of the Year, including two-time recipient Dylan Bundy. Bundy, who in 2011 was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year for all sports, pitched for eight seasons in the Major Leagues with the Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins.
His Rams teams also included stellar defenders, with both Jeb Bargfeldt and eventual MLB shortstop Pete Kozma garnering ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove honors during their careers at Owasso.
Overall, more than 20 former Rams have gone on to play professional baseball.
Turner’s career achievements at Owasso were highlighted with his induction into the school’s inaugural Hall of Fame Class in 2010. He is also a member of the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame and was inducted into the National High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2024.
Turner joined the coaching staff at Owasso prior to the 1979 season, serving as an assistant coach for four years before being promoted to head baseball coach in 1982.
As a player, Turner was a standout catcher at Owasso in the 1970s. He was instrumental in leading the school to their first baseball state championship in 1973 and was the first Owasso baseball player selected to the All-State team that same year.
