Under his leadership, Baylor reached unprecedented heights, including 13 NCAA Regional appearances, four Super Regionals, and a College World Series berth in 2005. His teams set numerous records, including a 24-game winning streak and an 18-game conference streak in 2012. Smith was named Big 12 Coach of the Year five times and developed 45 All-Americans and 83 MLB draftees during his time with the Bears. Smith’s impact extended beyond the field. His teams excelled academically and were deeply involved in community service efforts, including Hurricane Ike relief and humanitarian trips. He also served as head coach of the 2005 USA Baseball National Team, further solidifying his reputation on the international stage. After his tenure at Baylor, Smith brought his leadership and expertise to Auburn, where he served as pitching coach, and St. Mary’s College, where he was head coach. He also contributed to professional baseball as a pitching coach in the Detroit Tigers organization. Currently, Smith continues his legacy of excellence in Texas as the head baseball coach at McGregor ISD, where he remains a mentor and inspiration to young athletes.
