John Schaly, an ABCA Hall of Fame inductee and former ABCA President, ranks among the most accomplished coaches in NCAA baseball history. With 1,314 career victories, Schaly is tied for the 25th-most wins at all NCAA levels and second in Division II history. Now in his 28th year leading Ashland University, Schaly has guided the Eagles to 951 wins, 19 NCAA postseason appearances, five regional championships, and five NCAA Division II College World Series berths, including a record-tying 48-win season in 2019.
A trailblazer in college baseball, Schaly and his late father, Don—also an ABCA Hall of Famer—made history in 2015 as the first father-son tandem at four-year institutions to each surpass 1,000 career wins. Their shared induction into the ABCA Hall of Fame in 2018 marked a unique milestone, making them just the second father-son combination to be enshrined in the prestigious Hall. Schaly’s tenure at Ashland is marked by consistent excellence, with eight 40-win seasons and numerous accolades, including seven GLIAC and Great Midwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. Beyond his on-field success, Schaly has contributed significantly to the game as a former chair of the ABCA All-America/Gold Glove Committee and remains a respected mentor and leader in collegiate baseball.
